Hurricane Dorian Update (IPI Service Alert 09/03/2019)

Please be advised that Hurricane Dorian remains a dangerous category 3 hurricane and is slowly moving through the northwestern Bahamas. A hurricane warning and storm surge warning have been issued for a part of Florida’s east coast. Dorian is a threat to the Southeast from Florida to North Carolina this week.

Update from Norfolk Southern Railroad:

Hurricane Dorian

“Hurricane Dorian has increased to a Category 5 hurricane and is currently projected to move up the east coast. Due to the projected path of Dorian, the following gate and terminal closures are announced:”

“Norfolk Southern will close all origin facility gates to Intermodal shipments destined to Charleston and Savannah effective 9/2/19 at 4:00pm. The Norfolk Southern Charleston Intermodal Facility will also cease all operations effective 9/2/19 at 6:00pm. Closures are to remain in effect until at least Friday, September 6th.”

Current Gate Closures:

“Shipments ingated for these destinations prior to the announced closures will be loaded and advanced as operations allow. Once loaded, shipments will not be made available until they are grounded at destination. Norfolk Southern will continue to monitor the progression of Dorian and will take precautions to protect employees, track, and shipments as needed.”

Update from Union Pacific Railroad:

“Dear Premium Customer, In cooperation with the Norfolk Southern and Florida East Coast Railroads, Union Pacific will suspend ingates at all Union Pacific intermodal facilities for traffic destined to the Florida East Coast (FEC), including Miami and Titusville due to the likelihood of a prolonged period of hazardous weather conditions affecting Florida. Heavy rains and hurricane force winds are expected to occur over portions of Florida and elsewhere in the southeastern United States this weekend and into the middle of next week.”

The following ingate suspensions will be implemented:
“Effective 20:00 Local Terminal Time, Friday August 30, 2019, Union Pacific is suspending all traffic destined to the FEC, including Miami and Titusville, until further notice. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.”

Update from CSX Railroad:
“CSX Transportation (CSXT) continues to monitor the path of Hurricane Dorian and has made extensive preparations for the effects of the storm. In response to announced changes to port operations due to Hurricane Dorian, CSXT is advising intermodal customers of the following action:

  • “Effective September 3 at 1200, international traffic destined to Charleston and Savannah Port will not be accepted at origin terminals until further notice”.

”At this time, all CSXT-served intermodal terminals continue to maintain normal gate hours, subject to change as more information becomes available. Freight delays are expected for rail traffic into and out of South Florida as the storm passes Florida.”

“Please be advised that intermodal customers with freight moving through Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas may experience service disruptions due to the current projected track of the storm. As additional information on the storm’s path becomes available, CSXT may issue terminal gate closures and ceasing of train operations as needed.”
